Okay so this one isn’t technically Colorado Springs but Fountain is really close to the South side of the city. Fountain Creek Nature Center is a beautiful center with all sorts of different things for kids to explore. It just reopened earlier this month and I am so glad we decided to check it out this past Saturday. We had 60°F weather and we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get out of the house.
The main trail at the nature center is a 0.6mi trail that loops through the Cattail Marsh Wildlife Area. We didn’t see any wildlife except for a few birds but apparently during the spring and fall it’s a great place to see all sorts of animals. And in August and September the Monarch butterfly has a stopping point just along the trail. I wish I knew about that this past August because I think it would have been pretty cool to see a giant group of butterflies.
The trail is super easy. If it’s dry you could even use a stroller. Sadly you can’t bring your dog or bike on the Fountain Creek Nature Trail but there is a nearby trail that does allow dogs, bikes, and even horses. The nature center also offers several different nature programs that I think will be fun to check out. I love that we’ve discovered another free thing to do with the kids that they can do fairly easily. We’ve found that we enjoy going on hikes together and I think this one will be a new favorite for us. I can’t wait to go back and explore once it starts getting warmer and things start blooming. It’s already a beautiful place in winter, I just can’t imagine how great it’ll be come spring.
