A friend of mine from College recently published her first book and I was able to go hear her read a few passages from it two Fridays ago. I had a really great time and really enjoyed checking out Mellows Pages Library, a sorta DIY independent library that had a whole range of independent books. Definitely the sort of place you’d expect to find in the Hipster Capital of the United States.
I can’t say I’ve ever been to a reading before. Sure I’ve been to open mic nights and poetry slams and that sort of thing. But never a book reading. It was really interesting though. You know how you read a book and you have a certain idea of the tone and infliction used. You read it with a certain voice that makes sense to you. And then you go to a reading and you hear the book read by the author in her voice with her feelings and her inflections. It really changes things. Not drastically but it makes it easier to hear the author coming through the story. At least for me it did. I liked being able to note the differences between the voice I pictured in my head and the actual voice of the author.
